This Is Our Design #32- “Dolce,” live from SDCC

Welcome back to This Is Our Design. This week, we bring you a special in-person edition of the podcast, thanks to the universe bringing all the nerds together in San Diego for Comic-Con. Co-hosts Kate Kulzick and Sean Colletti get together to talk all things "Dolce," including the ridiculously good direction of Vincenzo Natali and the crucial reunion of Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter. Warning: Some of the audio clips in this episode somewhat drown out the discussion for a couple seconds. You can blame Sean for this, because he is technologically inept. We're not even sure how he exists in this day and age. Weird. Anyway, stick around for all the usual goodies, including a delayed "Hannibal by the Numbers," "Kate's Classical Corner," and "The Devil in the Details," and be sure to enter into the drawing for a free copy of Hannibal season two on DVD if you are interested in that.

This Is Our Design #31- “Contorno” with Dennis Perkins and Emily L. Stephens

Welcome back to This Is Our Design. Time to start worrying? Since the recording of this podcast and the posting of it, Amazon and Netflix have announced that they're passing on Bryan Fuller's arthouse series. Even if the worst possible thing happens, though, we've hired billions of monkeys to develop future scripts for Hannibal, which doesn't really matter if the show isn't picked up by another network. Also, couldn't we have used that money in a Kickstarter for the show or something? We didn't think this through... But co-hosts Sean Colletti and Kate Kulzick certainly think other things through this week with the help of Dennis Perkins and Emily L. Stephens, of The A.V. Club fame. It's an event-filled episode, including another iconic fight between Jack Crawford and Hannibal Lecter. Yet there's plenty more to talk about, such as character motivations, the role of happiness, and of course, music and other elements worth pointing out in "Kate's Classical Corner" and "The Devil in the Details".

This Is Our Design #30- “Aperitivo” with Molly Eichel

Welcome back to This Is Our Design. We're sorry to inform you that NBC has officially cancelled this podcast, but we're hopeful one of the streaming services will pick us up. In the meantime, check out our daily Aquarius podcast, which has already been renewed for 40 more seasons. On a more serious note, who has time for being serious? We suppose co-hosts Kate Kulzick and Sean Colletti might, as they delve into "Aperitivo" with the help of The A.V. Club critic Molly Eichel. It's an eventful episode that catches us back up with all our main characters—and Chilton. Psyche! We love Chilton and value him just as much as anyone else, even if he's...not all there. Have a listen as the crew discusses change among the central characters, Bella's departure, our new Mason Verger, and much more. Stick around for "Kate's Classical Corner" and "The Devil in the Details" in yet another episode of This is Our Design that is longer than the actual Hannibal episode we talk about (we're aiming for a 10-hour podcast by the time the season finale rolls around, which will surely kill the editors of the podcast, who are actually trained velociraptors). Please feel free to contact us at thisisourdesign666[at]gmail.com.

This Is Our Design #29- “Secondo” with Vincenzo Natali

Another Thursday, another This Is Our Design. We may or may not be able to continue saying that based on future screeners and scheduling, but really, isn't life unpredictable in general? Wouldn't Hannibal want you to embrace the spontaneity of suffering like the flying patterns of a sparrow? For being without this podcast is suffering. That's what we tell ourselves, anyway... What do co-hosts Sean Colletti and Kate Kulzick also tell themselves? Something equivalent to "OMGEUUURRRGGGHHH!!!" this week, because director Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice) makes a return appearance to talk about "Secondo" and the opening to this season of Hannibal that he has helped create. Discussion topics range from how we bear sorrow through stories, the effects of shooting through beveled glass, and the return of yet another beloved character in Jack Crawford (and his hat). After your "Hannibal by the Numbers," stick around until later in the podcast for "Kate's Classical Corner" and "The Devil in the Details," which round out a visually striking episode. If you'd like to message Sean or Kate, their Twitter accounts are linked below. Otherwise, leave a comment here or e-mail them at thisisourdesign666[at]gmail.com.

The Televerse #198- Interview with Brian Reitzell

It’s another light week of TV on the podcast, but a batch of spring finales give us plenty to discuss. First we look at the week’s comedies, including the release of Orange is the New Black season three and the finales of Silicon Valley and Veep. Next up are the genre offerings, including finales of iZombie and Game of Thrones, and plenty of Sense8 talk. Then afterwards, Kate has an in-depth chat with Hannibal composer Brian Reitzell about his approach to scoring season three.

This Is Our Design #28- “Primavera” with Simon Howell

Welcome back to Hannibal and This Is Our Design, where everything is sunshine and rainbows. That's right, Will wakes up in the hospital to a surprise party! Abigail is there. Alana is there. Jack is there. And even Hannibal is there. It was all a practical joke! Ha ha, silly Will. Your brain must have been flaring up again. Either that or someone has a case of the Mondays. Whoa, that got away from us. But few things get away from co-hosts Kate Kulzick and Sean Colletti, who are joined this week by Sound On Sight film and television critic Simon Howell to break down "Primavera" and all its not-creepy-at-all goodness (*insert hart pun*). Have a listen as the crew says goodbye to old characters and hello to new characters, along with discussing flashbacks, loneliness, and forgiveness. Stick around for "Kate's Classical Corner" and "The Devil in the Details," where nothing escapes scrutiny. And, should you feel moved to do so, feel free to post a comment below, hit us up on Twitter or send us an e-mail at thisisourdesign666[at]gmail.com.

The Televerse #197- ATX 2015 Wrapup with Emily VanDerWerff

It’s another manageable week in TV here at the podcast. We kick off the week with some SYTYCD talk before breaking down the comedies, including a full week of Adventure Time. Next up are the genre offerings, including a preview of Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell and looks at Sense8, the Hannibal premiere, and fun new installments of Orphan Black and Penny Dreadful. Afterwards, Todd VanDerWerff, culture editor of Vox, joins us to discuss the ups and downs of the 2015 ATX Television Festival.

This Is Our Design #27- “Antipasto” with Eat the Rudecast

This is 2015. This is the Year of the Sheep. This is the summer television season. This Is Our Design At long last, Hannibal returns to NBC for its third season (a first for visionary creator Bryan Fuller). Accompanying its return is the dedicated podcast co-hosted by Sean Colletti and Kate Kulzick. For the season three premiere, the crew is joined by the fellow Hannibal podcast crew of Eat the Rudecast: Cooper, Miko, and Ophilia. An elaborate set-up for an elaborate series: Dr. Lecter would be proud (or he would eat all of us. Both are acceptable, as far as we're concerned). On this Italian excursion, the panel talks about storytelling, aesthetics vs. ethics, observation vs. participation, complicity, Dante, and the inevitability of what's to come following the events of "Antipasto". But before that, feast your ears on the new recurring segment for TIOD: "Hannibal by the Numbers," in which Sean takes on needlessly painstaking work and countless pauses during viewings to tally numbers of lines of dialog and scenes for his own nefarious purposes. Following the bulk of the discussion, the triumphant returns of "Kate's Classical Corner" and "The Devil in the Details" round out your listening experience, which will be fully satisfactory or your money back! You can also contact the hosts at thisisourdesign666[at]gmail.com, leave a comment here, or reach out via Twitter (below). We appreciate all your feedback and, as a reward, are giving away a free copy of the first season of Hannibal on DVD, the winner of which will be announced on next week's podcast. Ciao!

The Televerse #196- The Wire (Part 2) with Dennis Perkins

Summer is finally upon us, giving us a lighter episode list and shorter podcast once again. First we look at the comedies, including the finale of Louie, and we follow that with the week’s genre offerings, including a preview of Hannibal season three and Outlander finale talk. Afterwards, Dennis Perkins of The A.V. Club returns to the podcast to help us with just a bit more discussion of one of television’s greatest series, The Wire.

This Is Our Design #26- “Savoureux” with Noel Kirkpatrick

Welcome to 2015 and to another episode of This Is Our Design, the Hannibal podcast that just won't go away. Ever! Seriously, if we find out there's a final season of this show, we're going to record those podcast episodes over the course of several decades (not really: Sean might die by then, because he has doubts about how long he can live without this show airing new episodes). Concluding the second season of This is Our Design, which analyzes the first season of Hannibal, is no small task. Thus, co-hosts Sean Colletti and Kate Kulzick have brought back the big guns wielded by Noel Kirkpatrick of TV.com in a podcast that is long. Very long. Extremely long. Too long? No. But to preview the topics discussed would be a fool's errand. Take it from us that this podcast is comprehensive. As with our podcast on the season two finale, there's a bunch of best-of goodies towards the end. That doesn't mean, though, that we neglect our recurring segments, "Kate's Classical Corner," "The Devil in the Details," and "Spoiled Meat," which is featured here for a final time. Adieu, "Spoiled Meat": We loved you unconditionally. We will, of course, be back to discuss season three of Hannibal in all of its Italian glory. Thanks for sticking with us, especially through all of our technical difficulties. You listeners are the best, and we greatly appreciate all the feedback and interaction. Have a great beginning to the year, and we'll be back in the recording booths soon! Feel free to join the discussion by leaving a comment below.
