Kate was laid up sick most of the week, so it’s a Netflix- and genre-heavy week. Fortunately, that gives us plenty of interesting TV to discuss. First, Noel and Kate talk through the week’s TV, starting with reality and comedy, including the latest installment of Netflix’s Terrace House: Opening New Doors and new cooking documentary series Salt Fat Acid Heat, as well as black-ish and The Good Place. Next up are the week’s genre offerings, including season one of Netflix’s Hilda and a quick look at Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, along with the premiere of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, and Doctor Who’s big Rosa Parks episode. Afterwards, we head to the season spotlight and dive in with the third, and potentially final season of Netflix’s Daredevil.

So here’s something I don’t understand about Daredevil Season 3. Well, actually 2 things. And keep in mind that this is hands down my favorite show of the Netflix MCU shows.
How is it, NO ONE F***ING SHOOTS KINGPIN IN THE HEAD? All it would have taken was for one of the FBI guys to put a bullet between his eyes and he and his shenanigans would have been over. It is something I always wonder about with these shows who have that kind of mastermind-in-the-shadows, all-powerful-crime-boss, plans-three-steps-in-advance character. Especially if that character does not bribe his way to the top but blackmails everyone around him into helping him/her. At the latest, you should know you’re disposable the second you get tasked with killing another blackmailed helper. From this point on your clock starts ticking.
Part of this is due to the fact I never liked that type of character and never understood how people got so fascinated with them and sang their praises (which is the second thing I don’t get).
Whether it was Greer on Person of Interest, Roman Nevikov on Life or Wilson Fisk here – a so-called “compelling bad guy” is not for me. Give ma a character like Carl Elias who can be an ally at once and who has a cat-and-mouse thing with some personal entanglements and respect going with our heroes. This I will love. It is also the reason I liked the first seasons of White Collar so much.
But a mastermind is not interesting. It is this black box story device of things he already could have planned, someone who seems too powerful – but at the same time is really easy to get rid off by a tiny piece of metal for like 2 bucks and someone competent who can keep his or hers mouth shut. Imagine The Punisher finally having too much of Fisk and just standing on a roof and shooting him – end of story.
Talking about the MCU shows: I was really shocked to hear about their cancellation. It’s not so much that I will miss them apart from Daredevil and maybe Luke Cage (I haven’t watched season 2 yet so the jury’s still out). It’s more that I didn’t know about the politics behind it so I was really surprised about it.
That being said: The finale episode of Daredevil season 3 really got a series finale feeling about it.
I thought about why I like Daredevil so much or, more specifically, why I do not like Jessica Jones or Iron Fist.
Just kidding. We all know why we do not like Iron Fist.
Part of it is Charlie Cox. He is just so damn charming and I totally buy all the women falling for him. Probably even a few men. But part of it is also season 2. While everyone was bashing the season, I really, really liked it. I just rewatched it and – while I did skip a few minutes every other episode – all in all it just worked for me. And weirdly, especially The Hand, Electra and her being the Black Sky. It is such a comic booky thing, this secret organization of trained ninjas trying to rule the world by finding a weapon no one knows for what purpose that is Daredevil’s ex-girlfriend. It is just so big and over-the-top that – for me – it is easier to believe than Wilson Fisk owning half the FBI.
The rest is just Matt Murdoch and his friends. I ship their friendship so much.
I’m sorry, what were we talking about? Never mind. I’ll be back when I remember it 😀
