Another year, another pair of TV goals. With 2018 underway and several series starting back up, it’s time for Noel and Kate to refresh their TV resolutions. How did we do with our 2017 resolutions to watch more anime and streaming series, and what impact, if any, has that made on the way we interact with TV? Noel and Kate discuss this and more in our special segment this episode, then unveil our resolutions for the new year. Before that, however, we have a full week of TV to break down. Why am I listening? It’s a decent podcast, and since it’s chaptered I can skip over the shows I didn’t watch. I like how informed Kate’s perspective is on music.
It wouldn’t be that hard to do a DVD shelf for The Dekalog, because it’s only 10 episodes.
Concerning your resolutions of 2017: Did you two made like a list of the things you watched and what you thought of them (like a ranking or something)? I was wondering, especially when it comes to Kate’s resolution of watching more YouTube/web series what shows she liked best. I think you guys kind of did that, but if I remember correctly there were a few ones missing.
I watched the entirety of Carmilla since you recommended it a few months back and ended up really liking it – despite the shortcomings that the show has. So when I listened to this podcast, it made me remember how refreshing I found the queer representation – and I went back looking for other web series which had that aspect in common with Carmilla. But something with a bit more down-to-earth premise.
And I found “Anyone But Me” from creator, writer and director Tina Cesa Ward. I don’t know if you watched that show as well. What impressed me the most was the density of the story telling and the production and how well everything clicked into place. I binged the whole show in a day and then another show from TCW called “Producing Juliet” afterwards which did have a very different tone having characters who are about 10 years older than those in “Anyone But Me”. I am not very good at reviewing a show or even telling people what I like about a certain serien. But I tend to like the smaller, less loud and low stakes dramas more than something big and flashy. And both of those show have exactly that – plus interesting characters, performances and a dense story telling. So if you haven’t already, maybe you can take a look and tell us what you think 🙂
